As to the Examination in Chinese, the date now fixed for passing that Examination, viz. Sep. 1893 was settled before we knew he was coming on leave [see 3038877087]. I still think that he ought not to be given any further extension of time. His leave expires in March next. If he is really keen on the subject, which I rather doubt from his having allowed 4 months to elapse since we wrote to him before taking any steps even to find a Cantonese teacher in England, he could get some country teaching and finish his work in the six months after his return. If he does not pass in that time, I do not think he ever would, however much extension we gave him.
If any extension is given him it should be for a definite period from the date of arrival in Hongkong, & not left to Loveman's discretion.

Dear Johnson,
The only man we have at home from Canton is Revd. I. W. Pearce Plas yn Llwyn Wrexham. He is exceedingly nice and able in the language.
I have suggested to him that he should also apply to the Chinese Mission in case they have a vacancy at home.
Faithfully yours,
